Gorgeous pictures! I love dahlias. I can't think of any other flower that comes in more colors and shapes. Our town uses them in many of the city flowerbeds, and they are traffic stoppers.

Sierra, those dahlias are great. Mine are just leaves. :o( I'm pleased the tubers survived winter storage, but I either started them at the wrong time, put them out too late, or didn't fertilize enough.

Oh, well...there's always next year.

My dahlias are the best they have ever been this year..each one loaded with flowers and buds...the closest I have to a dinner plate is "Elsie Huston"..her first bloom is 8 inches across

I also plant glads close to the dahlias....to put on even more of a show at this time of year.

Mytime..Our city doesn't seem to use them at all....they are planting grasses and stuff like that..Hmmmm its to bad though....

Doris...when you plant them add bone meal to the hole.....then if you can fertilize with 202020 once or twice early in the season....I have also added turkey trot to the holes when planting and they do really well with that.

Savona thats a very pretty one! Where did you get that one? It looks to be the same type as my white one.

I have only one - Violetta, from either Botanus or T&T - and i'd show it off if the darn thing would grow more than 4" high and maybe even bloom! :>

And I wish I had taken a pic of mine in its glory, but now it is slug eaten and way past prime.

I was just out planting stuff that should have been planted long before now....and I was looking at the dahlias again....My dinner plate white one is now almost open.......to my surprise DH said I should cut some and bring them in the house......Hmmmm I guess he likes them. :O

Sharon, I'm shocked LOL!!! that you arn't growing any dahlias. ;)

For next year I would like to add some of the huge flowering ones to the new bed along the driveway....Its just a matter of finding which dinner plate dahlias actually get the huge flowers.

It's just about finished and put on a nice show, but I think this was the nicest bloom of them all.
Sierra, does your 'Ruffles' bloom in the "Y" of the branches? Mine seem to get very short stems on them and then get squeezed by the plant. I'll have to go out and release some of the coming buds, I think, so they will bloom nicer. I'm sure there is one on there that was about 10" across but it is half done and is losing petals now. I missed it on the weekend in all of its glory.

Savona, I love "Elsie" . Very pretty. And Syreeta, I never thought of getting any white ones. Something else I've now added to my "next year" list. It just keeps growing and growing and . . .

Hi Shauna,

No I can't say that my lavender ruffles blooms in the "Y" of the plant.....but I did notice that they have very short stems that the flowers are produced on. It would be so much nicer if they came out away from the plant a little more. I wonder if they will when the tubers get a couple years older.

If you notice my red one pictured above, the first bloom was in the "y" of the plant...and got squished.

I have read that you are supposed to take off some of the side buds on dahlias to make the plant produce larger flowers......I tried it only one year....that was a few years ago.....but I don't think I took off enough buds...I didn't notice any difference in the flower size......and now that I think of it.....I don't even have that dahlia anymore......I didn't bring them in that winter.....can't remember why now.

Maybe next year we should try this on a plant or two and see what happens.

Bodacious is supposed to get to 11 inches......when yours is fully open it might be.....Hope T&T has that one again next year as well. Its so nice and bright!

So do you think it will matter if I have dahlias with clashing colors along the driveway. LOL!!!

Sierra, the white one is about 4-5" across. Thanks for the suggestion of Eveline as the name but I think it is 'White Linda'. The friend who gave it to me and I have been looking at pictures online and we think we figured it out. This one looks really close. I don't think Dahlias along the driveway that clash will matter. Near Campbell River (On Vancouver Island) there use to be a house owned by an older couple (80s') that their entire front yard was a Dahlia bed. They had the colours of the rainbow and it looked great!

Sierra..Elsie came from Art's Nursery...she first went east to Ontario and then back to me..lol..she was a gift from a friend.
My biggest complaint is the box store cheapies..they are never what the package says that are.
This is "mistery day"...she was suppose to be red and white striped...and is more a hot pink...but she has bloomed really well and the colour isnt horrific ..so she is a keeper

Savona......If I am thinking of the same nursery its funny they sent your dahlia to Ontario first. Isn't Art's in the lower mainland.....if I remember correctly? I was given many plants this summer.....but I am running out of yard. LOL!!!

Mystery Day is the second dahlia in my first post. I'm not sure what you have here....the shape is nice....I don't think there are any ugly dahlias....I'm not sure I am crazy about the color though. Hmmm wonder if that is coral.. Maybe they meant it would be a MYSTERY till the DAY it bloomed...haha.

Very nice, Syreeta. I just was looking at two I have that haven't bloomed yet. One is a yellow and I can't remember what the other is. Both have buds, the yellow will probably bloom in the next couple of days. but, the unknown one looks like it needs another two weeks : ( The buds are so tight, I can't even tell what colour it is.
