Hi guys - I know I haven't been on much - seems like the only time people show up is when they need something right? - guilty as charged.

If you can forgive me - I have a rose question. It hit me while I was reading some of the other posts....

I have a Mordon Blush and a Winnipeg Parks( I think)and a Hansa that I planted last year. The Hansa is big and beautiful and growing wonderfully. The Winnipeg parks went crazy for a while but now seems to be dieing back. The Blush has never really got going anywhere to the same extent as even the Winnipeg Parks one - but now it too is dying back.

I am a gardening newbie - first time ever planted roses last year so I wondered if this is normal? or should I worry?

No it not normal to be dying back now in Central Alberta, unless you got a hard killing frost... where do you garden?

We need more detail, photos would be ideal too.

Do you see any insect damage?
Black Spot, rust or powdery mildew signs?
Are they receiving too much water, not enough water?
How is the soil?
Are they receiving plenty of sun? Air circulation, not overcrowded?
What about fertilizer?

I'm sure by now that youÂre getting the point as there are so many factors why it is dying back ;)

Btw, mid August is a good time to let the rose form hips, this will signal the rose to get ready for winter.

The Hansa is an old Rugosa that is extremely hardy. Even Moose,rabbits, voles, poor soil, etc can't keep it down or kill it. Just don't spray the leaves with anything!!!!
The Blush and Winnepeg parks are just not as hardy and resistant.

Geez Louise....I forgot I posted and forgot to come back until yesterday.

I don't think they are crowded - they are on the south side of my deck so are getting lots of sun.
My soil is sandy/light - but I had given them some slow release rose fertilizer earlier this summer - they don't get anything on a regular basis.
I don't think there is insect damage
What is black spot?
Can you water too much? - I thought roses loved lots of water -did I get that wrong? they are on the same sprinkler hose that I have for my flower bed so they do get water every night.

What is a rose hip?

Yes, roses like to be moist during the growing season but they also don't like boggy wet conditions. Too little will cause the leaves to be limp and dry, too much will starve the rose of oxygen and its leaves will turn yellow and drop off.

When there is not sufficient rain and your roses need a drink manually, it's best to water early in the day so that the leaves have time to dry before nightfall. Wet leaves during the night will encourage the growth of fungus diseases such as powdery mildew, rust and blackspot.
Overhead watering is best avoided, soaker hoses work great for deep soaks and to keep the top leaves dry.

A good weekly soak is much better than shallow daily watering, deep soaking will encourage the roots to grow deep, in which will make the rose much healthy and hardier to survive our harsh winters.
