I get those every once in awhile, but I have since I joined in Jan. so I never thought anything about it. I just click on it again and it opens. I have, in the last week, noticed that some of them are opening up really slowly, with 3 or 4 posts even. If I refresh the whole thread window, then it seems to make a difference. Don't know whether that is the forum or my computer. My kids are downloading so much stuff that I'm lucky I can even launch the forum.

I am not having the problem that you are having but it is taking forever for the threads to open when I click on them. This started just a short while ago.

I find some of the banner ads make the pages slow to open. There are a few (Viactiv and Band Aid right now) that keep it from loading altogether. I have to hit "refresh" again and again until I get a different banner ad. I'm not sure if you are experiencing this or something else, just a suggestion.

What i noticed is that it seems to wait until the ad at the top of the page is fully loaded before the rest of the page loads.

Hahahaha....I just got one of those messages for the first time.....it popped up and said it could not open this site. I did what Shauna said and refreshed and it opened. LOL. First time I had that happen.....maybe they are working on this site?

Anytime I open this site, the 'dial-up connection' window pops up. Since I use cable modem, obviously I don't need that window! I was closing it, which then kicked me offline. When I quit closing it and just ignored it, I stay on line. But things are slow to respond on this site, and it is the only site that is doing this and is slow. Earlier this week, it was so frustrating that I only checked it to see if that was still happening, and then left.

Well I thought the bugs had been purged out of here...but not yet..I posted in the august 7th thread and then went to follow the link to see if it was posted...dang got the message again and it wont let me back in there..I refreshed etc and it wouldn't work...guess I will go back to the garden to eat worms...grrrr...savona

I bet the site is running slower due to all those ads and the underlined words. I followed the instructions by clicking on the words and thought I would never see them again. But I see the word garden is underlined on Savona's post. I find those ads so intrusive and I don't appreciate it all.

I guess Pudge and I and other Mac users are immune to some of this stuff. We are not getting these pop up, underlined ad thingies, fortunately. But, what is with the loading taking so long? I do agree that it does seem slow, now that you mention it, on this forum and not others. Could it be because . . . we are asking for a few, tiny, minute, shouldn't be a problem to add, additions to our forum? Are the powers that be trying to tell us something? : )

The underlines came back for me tonight and it made me log in for the first time in months. Perhaps something is afoot...

I'm another Mac user and am having no problems. Pages are a little slow to load but not that bad yet. I have had the message where the page won't load but then I just reclick on the link and it opens for me.

Ditto as a Mac user. I find any thread on Gardenweb forums slow to load but no major problems otherwise. I do get the occasional message that the message is not to be found but refreshing the URL works everytime. Also as a Mac user I don't get the pop ups but I do get the ads at the top of the page. I guess the ads are a necessary evil to keep Gardenweb going.

What OS are you Mac folks using? No surprise that OS 9.xx is problem free...but is the UNIX based OS 10.xx also 'immune' to the problems that plague the wintels?

I'm using OS 10.3.9, I haven't upgraded yet to the newest system. A friend did the upgrade and lost files which scares me. So... off I wait until my cousin who use to work for Mac and now has his own repair and training centre can answer my questions and help. To make this gardening related, one of his clients made this wonderful wrought iron side table for outside. The top was inlaid glass with the Mac logo in green. The top was to pretty to put any plants on. :)

I am still using 10.2.8 at the moment with Safari 1.0.3. I have Tiger (10.4) in a box but I need to upgrade a few of my applications such as my back up utility before I install it. My cash flow has been severely limited this summer due to a lot of sick pets so I am going to wait a bit before purchasing the new apps and upgrading to the latest system. The other bonus to waiting is that a lot of the bugs get worked out in the subsequent updates.

SeaOtter, any chance that you could get a picture posted of that table. Sounds really like a cute thing.

Hi all
I also am having problems opening pages in Garden web. I thought it was the fact that I have an old computer and my modem is only 33,500 mhz. I also find that I have to refresh once or twice to open threads, and when they do open, the ads load first before anything else. Also sometimes when I go to Far North Gardening, the threads from the day before are displayed.

I'm opening them alright, but I can't post to the 'coldest temps' thread. So here's what I wrote for that...just a test to see if I can post here...

I'm not sure how my husband got the flowers to the wedding without them freezing, since the car certainly never got warm that day. Fortunately, we were poor college students and just had carnations--they are certainly hardier than many flowers usually used for weddings. One Valentine's day before we were married, he walked to the florist's and bought me a rose, and then walked back with it. It was a long time before I had the heart to tell him that it was frozen solid and turned black and fell apart the minute it thawed out. He hasn't bought me many roses since!

I was just in Fairbanks for the weekend--the flowers were beautiful, but the smoke was awful. It was good to get home. Right now I'm in the house taking a break from the heat outside. It's relatively cool in the house at 81 degrees. It's 80 in the shade, and 97 in the sun. I didn't take the thermometer out til just now...who knows how hot it was earlier. Unforturnately, I'm redoing the strawberry bed, and it is in the sun all day. Right now it is 100.8 on the front deck. And I did not set the thermometer in direct sun. Not good weather for transplanting strawberries!

I looked to see if I had kept the photo of the table. Unfortunately I can't find it. It was a small circular side table made of wrought iron that was inlaid with stained glass. The Mac logo in the middle was a wonderful green colour, I believe the rest was a black or another dark colour. (Time to go to bed, starting to have problems typing.)

I am not having problems opening GW. Maybe a bit slow and the ads do open first. But...I am on satellite for internet access and that seems to bypass a lot of strange problems...albeit from time to time it has problems of its own.
Wish GW had a subscription fee level that allowed subscribers access without ads. Currently, making a donation just gives you warm fuzzies in knowing your doing your bit to support a good site with a wealth of info.

Thanks for the Mac OS info. One of these days I am going to get one of the new satellite modems that is router-like and return to using my Mac for all things.

Hi all
One thing I forgot to mention was one thing that helps speed up opening of threads is to do a sweep and remove spyware from your computer. I did this and it improved it a bit.
