I have been growing "Atreano", in 25 gallon containers, since 2007. One tree goes into my unheated storage shed, and the other has been out every winter without any wrapping, etc. No problems with die back, or, damage from cold...so far. I also have an unidentified dark fig, from Mount Vernon, NY that also has been outside, in-ground and unwrapped, since 2007...with no damage.

Try to find some local figs that grow in your area, unprotected, and ask the owners if you can take a few branches for propagation. Offer to start a few trees for them also. Owners are usually flattered when someone shows an interest in their trees. If you have access to these, trees of choice, start air-layers, for instant trees after rooting. Air-layering larger branches, can cut years of waiting time, for figs.

I live in 7b and last year I did nothing to my fig trees outside and nothing happened. All are a live and well and had some sweet figs this year. I grow brown turkey, Celeste and hardy Chicago. However last winter in my area was exceptionally warm.I am not sure about the coming winter. I have the trees in raised beds I was thinking to cover the raised beds with greenhouse fabric.
