pruning

I just bought a house, and it came with a nice fig in the back. I got a few fruits this year, but not copious amounts. I had wanted to make preserves, but after eating fresh and sharing with my mom, I really had none left over. I figured some good pruning or root confinement would give a better crop next year. My tree is pretty gangly with few leaves and lots of branches. However, I have never pruned a tree before, and I have a bit of anxiety over killing it! Prune low or high? And how much to take off? I have a few long branches coming off the bottom that are to one side with only a handful of leaves on them. These seem to be good attacking points! I do have a photo, but I couldn't find out how to add it on here?
