Sambucus 'Sutherland Gold'

I purchased one of these this spring and planted it in a spot that I thought would qualify as part shade. Wrong. As the summer has worn on it is closer to full shade. The cultivar is now a solid green. Looks like every other elderberry that has reseeded around the farm....and elderberries reseed at about the same rate as the Boxelder/Manitoba Maple.

There is a question in here somewhere. LOL. How much sun does 'Sutherland Gold' need to maintain its gold color? Has anyone planted it in the shade and had 'green' results? Did I just get a bad specimen?

It is growing extremely well....it just looks kinda silly for me to be watering and caring for this green elderberry when usually I am yanking them out of my gardens and lawn.

I have 2 of these planted on the north side of the house (a bungalow) about 3 feet from the foundation. I was concerned they wouldn't be yellow but the gentleman at the garden centre assured me they would. He was right, they are yellow (gold?), but they'd likely be more so if planted in sun. We get a bit of very early and very late day sun where they are , that must be enough to do it.

That has been my experience anyway.

Mine is on the northwest side of the house. It's not deep shade, but only gets direct sun late in the day. The foliage is still gold. It grew about a foot this year - love it!
