Bressingham Purple seemed to be readily available and a big seller in nurseries this year. It is a cultivar of Polemonium yezoense. Actually, I am not sure it is even a cultivar....maybe just the plain species P. yezoense and Blooms of Bressingham gave it a name and is marketing away. Prior to the popularity of Bressingham Purple, there was a another named variety of P. yezoense called 'Purple Rain'.

P. yezoense is a native of one of the northern islands of Japan.

Anyways....about the performance of the plant. If I recall correctly it is described as compact. Mine grows at least 24" tall and even taller in the spring if you count the flower stalks. My overly-rich soil may account for the height. It is nice and full. The purple in the name refers to the dark foliage with purple overtones. However, the foliage is only dark in the spring. Greens in the summer and gets a bit darker again in the Fall. It blooms heavily in the spring and then off and on until freeze-up. Nice dark flowers.

Good companions? Something variegated would be nice with the dark foliage and dark flowers. In the sun it would look good in front of variegated Heliopsis 'Lorraine Sunshine' or next to an early blooming white flowered plant like Phlox maculata 'Miss. Lingard'. In part shade it would look nice plunked behind a gold leaved Hosta like 'Fried Bananas' or Guacamole'...or with Pulmonarias.

It is an attractive plant on its own....so I don't think you can go wrong combining it with almost anything.
