Absoultely, this plant is very invasive and it is indeed hardy in our zone, it spreads fast by it roots underground. Finally after 6 years I think I have won the battle of RoundUpÂing it to death.

If you really want this plant in your garden, yes, the best thing to do is to find a very large bucket, at least 18-24" deep, poke holes in the bottom for drainage and dig it into the ground, this will act as a barrier so that the roots will not spread any further.

Thanks Sharon - I don't think I will take any chances, I'll take it out this afternoon - I'll try it as an indoor plant.

Smart move, seriously that stuff is nasty in the garden, you don't want it to go rampant in the garden.

Another method you can try, is to grow it in a large bucket and trench it in the ground for the winter, mulch it good and repot it in a nice container in the spring instead of growing it as a houseplant. You will need lots of good light in order for it too bloom indoors, as well spider mites are bad on perennials indoors if they donÂt have a dormant period during the winter ;)

Also make sure when it finishes blooming, cut back those seed heads, if the seeds geminate where they land, you'll be in trouble ;)

I have my wintersown plants in a big deep planter. I like the seed pods too well not to grow it, but it takes over a flower bed incredibly quickly. I was able to eradicate a plant in less than a year, but it had spread about 3 feet even though it was only in its second year. They do appear to have pretty fleshy roots, so if you follow them and fully dig them out, you can get them all.
