Oh, my son loves these guys! They are so cute and furry. I have something similiar all through my corn plants, tho they don't seem to be eating the leaves, and they are orange and bronze in colour. I would love to know what they grow into also. Thanks for putting the picture up Sharon.

Yeah, they don't seem to be doing any damage. They just crawl, crawl and crawl.

I was driving on the highway the other day and they were hundreds crossing over the road. The nature lover in me tried not to squish them, swaying side to side to miss them! ;)

Yours may be some sort of wooly bear (cute huh?). In the link below the ones I am coming across in my garden are the bright brown ones in the first photo, leopard wooly bear. My kid has also discovered the last two on the bottom of the page, during mid to late summer (but none this year) and it looks like those are called a banded wooly bear. On one site they said farmers could tell by the width of the band on those caterpillars and predict how cold of a winter they could expect (but made no reference on how to read this). Sounds like these furry guys turn into moths, okay by me, won't catch me killin' them, they are way too cute! Besides, moths are tasty snacks according to our cat!

I can't imagine a highway being covered in them, what a picture that would make, I shudder at the thought of running over them, yick.
