We have eagles!!!!!!

My DH spotted one last week as he left the post office. I figured he just saw an osprey and got confused. Nope, he was right on. This is within walking distance of my house. I have pics as soon as my daughter can download.

If you come out to look, you better stop by and say "hi"

Yipppppeeeeee!!!!!!!

Actually, I'd like to change our National Bird to something else. The eagle is a felonious robber. Twice last week, while out fishing, I witnessed a bald eagle rob an osprey of it's hard-won catch. While I'll admit it's exciting to watch nature in action, I hardly think our National Emblem should be engaged is such activity!
Besides, I've seen eagles eating road kill, right along with the vultures. Yuck!

    So cool!!

Wasn't that a gorgeous shot of that nest! And I don't know if y'all noticed in the story, but the Fish and Wildlife Commission has aerial photos that show that this is at least that pair's second year in that next. They had a baby there last year too!

As for bald eagles being scavengers _ my teak lounge chairs came out of a neighbor's garbage pile, and I'm proud of that. Kept them out of the landfill. If they're eating roadkill, good for them. The only time I've seen one up close was because I stopped my car on 27 somewhere near Clewiston I think, concerned that the bird so close to the road must be hurt, only to realize, it was busy recycling roadkill.

I slinked away quietly and it ate on.

Beautiful photo's and birds, I am so happy to see them here in S Fl. I love watching all the birds. We have hawks and osprey in the back yard from time to time. I love to watch them. And once we had an owl. He sat right on my pergula for a few hours. :o)

Yep, Coffeemom speaks the gospel truth. It was a story on the 11 o'clock news last night.

Looks like you are getting a new nickname...the "birdlady".... first the hummer that shows up on cue every year when you have visitors and now this.... :)

Your so lucky to have a nest so close to you Coffeemom. They are a joy to see. Like Katkin, I've had owls and osprey also.

Congratulations, Kristi...they are so much fun to watch, and so beautiful. But Brute, I think they are a PERFECT national emblem. They are so gorgeous and proud looking. And as for being "felonius robbers," well...that works for me, too. Just means they will fit right in with the "national" crowd in Washington!

Seriously, in nature, animals will steal anything they can get, if they are strong enough and fast enough to take it. I've even seen turkeys (Ben Franklin's choice for national bird) fighting over food and the faster, stronger one wins. That's just the way of the natural world. But don't think eagles depend on stealing for all their meals. I've watched them hunting and fishing many times, and they are very good at it. They just don't see the need, apparently, if another bird happens by with a fresh caught fish. That's just opportunism, as is eating roadkill.

Long live the eagles. AND the ospreys. AND the vultures. And the whole gang, feathered, furred or scaled. They've got it worked out between them, and when we leave them alone, they usually do just fine.
