My Fig Tree

19 years ago

{{gwi:813007}}

This little tree gave me delicious 50 figs. This was the third crop since Feb. The first 2 dropped. Something it never did before. It had more figs than leaves. It is in its 4th year.

Thank you James for telling me how to post this. So simple when you know how.

    Lucky you!

    I did not get ONE stinking fig from any of my potted fig trees, granted most are in their first yr but geez I thought Id get something!

    My two inground figs are a different story they have some figs but one seemed to have stopped growing and the other spent most of the season growing and even tho I pinched the tips to encourage fruit growth Im just not sure they'll make it either.

    Frustrating fig season to saythe least! ;(

    Hi Peg,

    Woww -- 50 figs & in Z6. I had a latturula tree about the same size & it gave me 20+ figs & I am already with the moon. Hope U can share with us the variety as well as how's the taste.Thanks.

    Fortisi,
    I'm not bragging, I think it's beginners luck but I've had incredibly good luck with this year's cuttings and my first yr. ones. All but 2 have at least one fig and most have more. I've had 3 or 4 ripe ones here and there but the rest are not ripe yet. I have one 1st yr. DuD. Maybe it will improve with age. It has 17 small figs So far none have been edible and the rest don't look any better. LOL.

    I hope your figs improve. It's discourging when you wait all year and see no fruit.

    Now that I know how to get pics on here I'll take some of the babies and post them.

    Peg, That fig's a beautiful sight. I'd love to have a cutting when you're ready to trade (as would many of us I'm sure).
    Could you (or James) share the posting tip that worked. I've been saving tips on posting pictures for when I have time to sit down and try it.
    Thanks

    What is the variety of fig?

  • 19 years ago

    {{gwi:813011}}

    To those who asked, the Variety is unknown. Passed around the neighborhood originator also unknown. The taste is terrific. Very juicy and sweet. I probably let the last figs get overly ripe, they just driped juice.

    As to cuttings, right now I'm stumped. If you look closely at the above picture the main two branches have no leaves or growth until the very end where the cluster of figs are. If I cut the short ends off for cuttings I'm afraid I won't have any figs next year, unless now that the figs are gone, (eaten by me) it puts out some new growth before loosing its leaves and going dorment. There is some newer growth at the bottom. I'll just have to wait and see what developes between now and dormancy.

    To fignut: If your email is posted here on GW I'll email you the picture posting info James sent me.

    Peg, I sent you and email, tell me if you got it!

    I am growing what I believe is this same fig tree (variety). Mine came from a cutting of a huge tree growing in an old orchard in northern California. Try drying one when it gets very ripe. I bet it turns tan and has a tough skin and amber insides. One of the best tasting figs I have or have ever had. I will post pics tomorrow.

    This could be Figue de Marseille.Could be related to Kadota, 2 crops type.

    I just lost my reply post! I'll try again.

    Loslunasfarms, No I didn't get your email. Try this.
    ptischome@aol.com.

    Figfarmer, No, it doen't turn tan nor is the skin tough, The inside has almost no color, just a little pale pink. I look forward to seeing your pix.

    I've had a few figs from my different 1 yr old plants. One here and there so far. Maybe 5 or so. I realize that as they mature they may taste better but so far nothing has compared to the delicious fruit of this tree.

    I have a one year old cutting from this tree that has 2 unripe figs. It will be interesting to see what they taste like. However, the weather has turned cool after a very hot summer. This my affect the taste too.

    Lots of fun figuring in all the variables.

    That looks beautiful. If you ever do get a chance for cuttings please let me know. Congratulations on your success. I just started growing container figs this year and I haven't had any fruit yet (understandably), but I'm crossing my fingers for next year.

    Wild Forager,

    Thank you. Remind me around Dec. after it goes dormant. If it looks viable I'd be glad to share.
