hybrid hibiscus @ HD

I was in HD this weekend (St. Pete, 22nd Ave) and they had an end cap filled with these really nice hybrid hibiscus. They only had one variety, "Spin the Bottle", but there was no way I could resist buying one. I'm used to the hybrids with really special flowers having a somewhat scraggly appearance, but this cultivar seems to have the best of everything.

Last year, for a couple weeks, Lowes had hybrid plumeria, Jungle Jack varieties.

The rest of the year, we get tons of generic, mass market varieties to choose from. So get them while the getting is good.

Just bumping up the post...I have this same variety. It was a head turner in Home Depot. After a few years of pot culture and no freezes here in Central Coastal Florida...I finally sunk it in the ground. Wouldn't ya know we got freezes this January. Killed all the branches but now it is growing like a weed from the root zone with those amazing glossy leaves. Soon the dinner plate sized Carnival flowers will be showing themselves....for a tropical hibiscus way hardier than I thought. Then again they were in a flower bed with about 2in of landscape mulch.

I've seen those hibiscus (their tags say "HibisKISS") and have been tempted to buy one. I wondered if they are a house plant or can they be planted in the ground. I'm guessing pot culture. I'll be interested to hear how it does for you.

have you attended any of the Hibiscus shows?? i like the almost blacks, copper, bronze metallics or smokey grays .
Such unusual colors for flowers lol Finally located one called "norman Lee " which had 14 inch flowers in 5 colors .!! Was glorious until Frances put the shadehouse on top of it lol. gary

They are hardy down to 33 degrees and grow to the 4 foot range so I think they are probably happiest outdoors like any tropical would be. However many growers sell outside zone 10 so I think that is why some plants get touted more as "houseplants" or "annuals" when in reality they are neither if you're in a warm area.

I have never been to a show but I've been to a couple of gardens that have a lot of hybrid plantings. The blooms are very impressive.

Stumbled across this older post while looking for information on my HibisKiss "Spin the Bottle." I've had it for 2 years. It took a mini-hit due to frost in late November/Early December this year (2013). It recovered just fine and started leafing out beautifully. The past two nights, we got down to 33 and 30-31. It's hit again and I'm wondering if it can recover from that, since the leaves were plentiful, but immature.
Wallisadi, I'm afraid you're so close to me that I'm spitting into the wind here. Sigh...

I've seen hibiscus get frozen to the ground and come back from the roots. Actual results with different varieties may vary, though.

In 12 years of living in Titusville, I've lost 6 or 8 Hibiscus due to frost.

I've had it in the ground for about 8 months, did fine, unlike some of my others that look like Superman after Kryptonite exposure.

That's great that this one is so hardy, because most of the fancy hybrids are not hardy, and have absolutely no nematode resistance, from what I've heard. I've seen them grown in containers up here and protected during freezes, but not in the ground. Most people up here in N. Florida treat them like annuals. If they live through the winter, fine. If not, buy another one next year.
