Looks like a Brown Turkey variant. What's the taste and sweetness level like?

This is not Brown Turkey, BT has dark strawberry flesh and has a much darker skin (I ate my first ripe BT fig yesterdag).
The leaf and fruit is very like Brunswick (Magnolia).
    Very nice pictures!

    Angeniet

    Angeniet,
If your BT has much darker skin, you're most likely thinking of the California BT which is very dark skinned.

The neck of the figs is thicker on my Brunswick, and the leaves don't appear to be Brunswick to me.

I agree with Leon. The closest match for the fruit skin color, stem, pulp, and leaf is Brown Turkey, aka Eastern Brown Turkey or English Brown Turkey. It is not San Piero (California Brown Turkey), in mho, nor is it Brunswick.

This Is English Brn Turkey, that is grown in Europe, also Found under Bayernfeige Violetta name In Germany.
Suppose to be Hardy at -23C.
It is not Brunswick at all.
The English Brn Turkey coming from UCDAVIS is a misnamed fig,and they recognised it is another variety.
I do have a small plant of UCD Brn Trk,and one Small Bayernfeige From Gene. This is identical To Bayernfeige,in shape of leaf and fruit.
Suppose to be indeed the hardiest fig Known.
Antonio:Please respond to Leon Question:What is the taste and flavor Like:(I am interested too)Congratulation.

hey you fig addicts; don't you know it is Paradiso fig!

I who lives in a very cold country know it and you guys where figs grow like crazy fail to identify it:-)
    Please congratulate me:-)

*****again, Paradiso very prolific fig and tough cookie.
One more thing, I ate 7 of them already this past week and can you imagine they ripe soooooooooooo early in Ontario.
I guess I can call myself a real fig farmer?:-)

Radovan -- Paradiso figs are green with no hint of brown:

    {{gwi:755971}}

Following is a picture of what I refer to as Eastern Brown Turkey or English Brown Turkey. The picture is from a German fig site Mercato-Verde.

gene, i am sorry BUT Paradiso figs are NOT green and not brown they are more on a bronze color as the owner's pics are indicating. as all of us know color depends on Sun exposure but i just want to let everyone know i have over 10 years of Paradiso experience from many different nurseries and all of them were on bronze color not green.

****hey bro come over to my backyard in Kanada and enjoy paradiso figs with this good hearted Serb:-)
    welcome anytime!

Radovan:The picture Gene is Showing is From Pomona Italiana,The most prestigious Book of fruits Written in THe 18th Century.
You Had Brown Paradiso from more than one Nursery, because they keep perpetuating the Mistake,so You can't go by That.
Pomona Italiana,is the bench mark fruit tree varieties are recognised.
So if you want to Know more download it.It is a free download.
You will See that Paradiso is totally green, and the two picture Gene is showing is the corect Paradiso.

    Hi Radovan,
I wish I could come up and help you enjoy those delightfully tasting figs! I still respectfully disagree with you regarding the name -- but as good as figs taste, they should all be named Paradiso :-)

Here what Adriano from Canada` has to say about Paradiso in his website,a brownish red medium fig.Second crop has excellent flavor.Good pot plant.Well Paradiso is not a brownish fig, but a green fig.Paradiso in italian means Heaven, ciao
    Giuseppe

Hi,I posted a picture of this fig on Dec.23,06. Everybody thought it was Longue d'Aout. The picture was from a regular camera, now I have a digital camera and it is much clearer.Leon and Herman the Breba has a medium sweetness level with a delicate strawberry flavor. The main crop is sweeter and stronger flavored but still delicate and different.

    stay well,
    Anthony

Well Antonio:That is what i wanted to know.
I will take very good care of my little English Brn Trk,because it is a winner.
One More Thing from you Antonio.
I would like you to put on some picture of fruits from your Violette de Bordeaux so all fig forum people can see it and maybe ID it,because it is very diff, than other Violette de Bordeaux i have.I have very small fruits on my young one but i am not sure if they will get ripe this year or if they will grow full flavor. Thanks

Hi Herman, This English Brown Turkey is the unknown I gave you and Gorgi. Is this tree Violetta or English Brown Turkey? O.K. I will take some pictures of Raintree's Violette de bordeux.

    stay well,
    Anthony

    Well,
I was very surprised with the statement that:

    BV == EBT!

Not that I am an expert on either, but this certainly adds
to my fig naming confusion, confusion, confusion...

    George (NJ).

Antonio:I was saying that Your Unknown,is English Brown Turkey, and this tree here in my Garden, look exactly(fruit leaf)as Bayernfeige Violetta i have growing next to it.
Now Antonio look at this picture i post here and then look at your picture of figs on a plate, above.

This picture come from Germany showing Bavarian Violetta. What do you see?

Antonio:Sorry I missed to tell you I have seen picture of the same fig By english gardener ,and they call it (same fig) English Brn Trk.
That is while it is safe to say that the English brn trk is the same fig as Violetta, and your fig is it.Hope this will help

Anthony -- the fig picture has some similarities to the fig picture in "READS NURSERY" catalogue. Check it out on their fig page. At the bottom of their page it would say click to go to fig varities. Interestingly they have 2 types of B.Turkey

Gene and Mountainman, my Brown Turkey looks exactly like the one in your picture! I live in the Netherlands so it must be (English) Brown Turkey.

Could anyone send a picture of the Brunswick/Magnolia leaf to this forum? Unfortunately it is not to be found on figs4fun!!!

    Angeniet

    Hi, Angeniet,

Following are some pictures of cultivars that are generally agreed to be Brunswick (Magnolia, Dalmatia, Quarter-pounder, etc.)

Here they are. Thank you for confirming what i believed for a while:That Antonio fig is English Brn Turkey, and that having a young one in my Garden ,I have a true English Brn Trk Now.I was looking for it for a long time.

    BRUNSWICK 1,2,

Sorry Herman but I have my doubts with your statement that English Brown Turkey is the same as Bavarian Violetta.

According to Baud the figs of EBT weigh about 30 - 45 grams and Condit mentioned something near it. The figs of BV however have a weight of up to 111 grams! (according to their website)

Do you know the average weight of your EBT respectively BV?

Hi german_figfriend: I accept controversy about figs, because it is the most confusing subjiect, possible.
One thing you have to clarfy thow.
Is Baud and Condit talking about breba fig weight or about Main crop weight.
This is very different, one from the other.
Also talking about the weight of my so called English Brown Turkey, that comes from Antonio(Espo),You can see from yourself in the Espo post that his Breba is in that Range,of over 100 grams, but you can ask him yourself if you do not believe me.
Now on the other hand Main crop is usually smaller, but Espo (antonio)also can tell you what weight.
Regarding my Bayernfeige :It has 4 main and one Breba. The Breba is almost ripe and is only about 50 grams in weight still hanging on tree.
I would like to note that the fig is very young and produces smaller fruits this first year so i know it can grow larger than 50 grams in the future.
It has the exact shape of the Brown turkey picture feathured by Mountain man,and exactly like the unknown, feathered in the above first post by Espo.
So your coment is wellcome, because all we want is clarify this subjiect, mainly.
What the original English Brown turkey Known from the 15th century looked like, and if it still exist unaltered today.?

    To Mountaiman and Herman,
Thank you very much for the very clarifying leaf pictures of the Brunswick fig.
About the weight of the breba of Brown Turkey i agree with Herman 100 grams is very usual cannot say for the main crop they never ripen in my dutch garden.
I don't know what the Brown Turkey looked like in the 15th century, what I know is that BT was generated in the Provence, France

Herman and Mountainman; The pictures of the tree, (bush) labled Brunswick 1 and 2 are exactly like what I have. long thin lacy looking leaves. I received the cutting from Georgia Jack as "Jack's Qtr. Pounder,". The fruit hasn't ripened yet but the shape of the fruit is very strange. It looks like a fig growing out of a fig. Wish I had a camera
to show you. There is the stem and the start of a fig and then a larger fig growing out of it. Like cojoined twins. This is their first year. They are quite large. I don't expect them to ripen for another month. This ID and naming has me completely baffled. I think I will stick to taste, red, white, or brown.

On Thursday we had hot, muggy, 100 degree weather by Friday night it had dipped to the low 40's.

    Peg

Peg, thank you for your posting. I have the same cojoined siamese twins but on my Paradiso fig. I was scared that I was maybe cursed when my figs started producing sooo strange fruit, I blamed my mother in love maybe she cursed me:-) One stem and 2 or some of them 3 figs on the same stem. Or, was I blessed to get "double"?

Peg:Do not worry about the shape of fruits:
If you look at the two sets of picture above you can see the fruits are different in shape.
That is how Brunswick is .It makes fruits in many shape and forms according to where location, drought or too much rain, etc. Both figs above are Brunswick.

Brunswick leafs are so appealing to me and would like to have one but I never, never could locate one Brunswick fig in Ontario, Canada.
I would really, really like to own one. Any idea?

    Seed Saver Exchange or UCDAVIS

    Randovan:
Thanks, I'm happy to hear I'm not the only one with weird looking fruit.

I'd be happy to share a cutting with you but these are first year and too small to take a cutting this fall. I'm rather new at this with only one mature unknown potted tree. The rest are first yr. courtsey of Jack and Gene and I'm waiting to see what they produce. I'll keep you in mind as I think its fun to share different cultivars. That way we have a varity and can see what grows best and tastes good in our various growing conditions.

I had one fig from a 10 inch plant that tasted awful. Then another one ripened and it was very good. It just takes time and observation.

Herman, Thanks, they may be Brunswick but Jack sent them as Qtr. #, This is why naming is so confusing and frankly. I can't keep up with it.

    Peg

Just starting to see figs on my young Brunswick. I wonder if they still have time to ripen for me before the season ends?

    Vern

Peg, Brunswick is also known as Magnolia, and Jack's Quarter Pounder is described as a large form of Magnolia.
So I wouldn't worry about it being a misnamed fig - especially if you got it directly from Jack!

Herman, the weight of the EBT mentioned was the range from the main crop (30-35 g) to the breba crop (40-45 g).
For me Mr. Baud is a trustworthy source and his EBT seems to be authentic. Maybe his EBT isn't authentic but who knows? I can't judge it.
I think Brown Turkey is the most popular variety in Central Europe and I don't wanna know how many of this BT or EBT are mislabeled.

Herman, I accept your opinion about EBT and BV, albeit I don't share it. :-)

Here is a link that might be useful: Baud's EBT

This may be a good case (BV vs. EBT) for a DNA analysis by
UCD. BTW, the BV is patented, so it better be a unique fig!
    George (NJ).

From the pictures I have seen, I do admit that both BV and
EBT do look somewhat similar, though...

    OK Germanfigfriend.:
If Mr Baud say, that the English brown Turkey has breba of 45 Grams, and if he is right, then all the people on this forum, some from Europe do not have the original English brown turkey, because Antonio,Dutchfiggi, and Flax they all have breba over 100 grams on their figs.
So how do you explain this one?

    Radovan.

At the beginning of July someone posted about having purchased a couple of figs at Colasanti's in Ruthven Ontario. I believe one of the figs mentioned was Brunswick. I was unable to get there to get one as I was just a couple days from a trip to Fl to visit my family. (and there is that whole border thing)

    ~Chills

If you make it out and they still have them, let me know.

Well Herman, how shall I explain the Brown Turkey complex?
If you take a look at figs4fun and the different descriptions of BT you'll find everything from small, medium to large fruits with opened or closed eye and so on.

For me it's high time to do genetic testing on all the so called (E)BT varieties which are circulating. And I bet there are at least a few genetic different varieties.

Until then we have to live with such different varieties of (E)BT.

I have one that looks identical to the first set of pictures. I don't know the name of the variety, but I would like to trim mine. Can someone tell me when would be the best time to trim it without sacrificing any of next years crop? TIA.

"I do have a small plant of UCD Brn Trk,and one Small Bayernfeige From Gene. This is identical To Bayernfeige,in shape of leaf and fruit." Herman... 8/6/07

Are you saying that (you believe) UCD Brn Tky is V. Bayernfeige? When did you get the UCD BT?

....I've got a fig that I received from a friend of my wife. It was in her yard when she moved in (years ago) and it had produced (unprotected) for years (previous owners were the stereotypical little old Italian family who still, presumably after decades in this country, spoke with thick Italian accents). This year it has produced a single (still small and green) fig and I'm hoping to post a pic when (if) it ever ripens. I have a couple of shots here that I'll post, but I understand that id'ing figs is difficult

    ~Chills

The leaves are close to Antonio's fig and with BV,but i would adventure to say any more than that.
When you will have fruits we will know more.

I was unclear , the pictured fig isn't the BT from UC Davis. The pictured fig is one I got locally (as per the description) I'll definitely post a pic of the fruit when/if it ripens. I can say that it is definitely not a breba as it has formed on new wood.

(I could post pics from the UCD BT, if anyone is interested).

    ~Chills

Paradiso fig is not green fig except if there is not enough sun exposure than fruit does NOT get that real Paradiso color.
Please, see the site below and description for Paradiso fig.

    http://www.adrianosfigtrees.com/varieties.html

Well, I feel a bit better. The link below to my mystery fig was thought to be an EBT from members on this list. Looking at the photos on this discussion and comparing the necks of both figs and the deeper purple color of my fig to the posted EBTs I no longer believe my tree to be EBT. Back to the drawing board...

Here is a link that might be useful: Sue's mystery fig

Sue, look at my posting titled Can someone Identifythis fig July 22,2007. The two figs look a lot alike to me.

    Vern

Susan:I have a fig just like yours, and it is an authentic Brown Turkey.
This Variety,is Eastern Brown Turkey wich Is distinct from English Brown Turkey.
The confusion is that both can be written down as "EBT",but they are two different fig cultivars.
And in fact i think this is a very good Tasting fig,a keeper.
    So Enjoy.

    Hi Vern,
Mine does look similar to yours. I was told the previous owners brought cutting of the tree from Portugal. I was hoping it was a bit more exotic than a BT or mission. :-)
I'm hoping the tree ripens more fruit soon so I can take better pictures.
Two of the figs Jon put in his posting "Today's Harvest Pix" with all those luscious fig varieties look like mine, a Black Jack and ugg, a BT 5. If it is, it is. :-)
    Sue
PS: Four of the 22 cuttings I started last month took! Three are small 1 gal size but one is a 3-footer in a 5 gal. It was rooted when I dug it up. May have figs next year after all. Happy Dance!

Keep in mind that figs can look very, very different in dfferent climates, with different weather, soil and fertilizer. It is quite possible that they coud be both green and bronze depending on conditions.
