I keep reading about propagating figs from cuttings and I would like to know what it is that happens when you use a cutting larger than what everyone prescribes. I was curious if it had to do with the possibility of the wood being too hard to send out roots or something?

I have not had a problem with any cutting size. Usually the variety determines what it takes to root.

For example-

I had rooted several in water before transferring to soil in cup.

Most did well but a variety turned to mush in water.

I have also had success putting a cutting horizontally in soil just below the soil surface. I kept it wet and had success as well.

I have seen logs rooted with success in dirt.
