Should I top fig tree

I covered a limb of a friend's fig tree with dirt last September. The limb rooted nicely and my friend dug it up for me yesterday. The limb is about 5 and a half feet tall. No branches coming off from the limb. I was wondering if I ought to top the limb? If so when should I do this? I am thinking of keeping this plant in the garage over the winter and planting it in the yard next spring. I can't make up my mind where to plant the tree now.

My friend thinks the tree is a Celeste, but he is not sure. Since I have gotten real interested in figs, I am finding that there are a lot of fig trees in this area, but know one knows what kind they are.
