pepper plants

A friend gave me some pepper plants she called Sweet Italian. The peppers are long and tapered, 8-10". They eventually turn from green to red and are delicious roasted. My question is how can I make them grow taller? The peppers are so long they are resting in the soil and the tips start to rot. Any tips?

Mulch under the plants, kind of like what you would do for strawberries?

Agreed, mulch would be the best way. Or you can try a narrow raised bed, so the peppers hang outside the bed. Third option would be to select a variety of Italian frying pepper that has not been bred to be so short.
