Sad Sad

A friend gave me a very small start of Janice Brown Daylily last Fall. It had put out one scape this Spring and was going to have its first bloom this morning. This picture shows the "crumbs" from the deer's midnight snack that I found on the ground at dawn. Have to wait till next Spring to see it for real.

Oh no. I hate those darn deer and I don't ever have any! What a bummer that your not going to be able to see your new daylily bloom. What about your other daylilies? Are they protected from the deer?

Bless your heart, that is sad! And that is a pretty daylily too.

Well, nothing much you can do about it except look forward to it blooming next year. Sorry about the bloom.

I'm so sorry, boy, it would have been lovely. Look at that green eye!

I feel for you. I had 1200 seedlings and ended up with around 700 before we moved. We tried everything except an 8 foot cyclone fence with razor wire at the top.

That's a bummer. I don't have deer in my yard, but I would be totally bummed too. The leftovers look like butterfly wings.

We had a big deer problem until we put electric fences around any plants we wanted to protect. The fences aren't pretty but now we can enjoy our daylilies and roses. Avedon

Thank you for your sympathetic words. I sprayed a deer repellant 2 days ago after we had found some damage. Didn't work so tonight I shot all the Daylilies with an alternate product. Hope it protects the ones that are left.

I really hate it when the deer get to scapes that are just about to bloom. I use the deer fortresses here and they have been pretty darn effective at keeping the deer away from my beds

Oh I'd be mad! It looks like it was a gorgeous flower too.

I have a deer problem. I hung alum pans in the beds, put human hair in the front yard beds and ran a cord with a loud radio (country music) out to the backyard beds.
I've seen signs of them around the edges of the beds but so far I think these things have helped some. I also leave my lights on the corners of house in backyard. Sorry about your Janice Brown. Hope you find something that helps keep them away. Sarah

This may have been tried here before, but it works great for me. I mix up eggs and water in the blender. I use enough water to make it able to go through a spray bottle. I spray it on the daylilies and the Deer leave them alone. I have a very bad Deer problem. Really!!!! Good luck!!!

That egg solution works for me, too, as long as we dont get a rain in the ,iddle of the night to wash it off, then the deer come in before i can get them sprayed again. I use 2 eggs beat up really good, and add it to a gallon of water, then also add about a tsp of Tobasco sauce to the mix.It works for at least 2 weeks if it dont rain to wash it off..
Then I spray them all again in 2 weeks.

The deer ate some of mine before it got warm here. Since the grass has grown enough to feed them they left all my dl's alone. Last year though I had a fence put up around my newer boughten/traded for dl's. These weren't touched. Good luck to you.!!

I found this on the Deer Resistant forum here on Gw
Also, horse manure is supposed to work??

Let me add my sympathies to the chorus. I'm an animal lover and my DH is a hunter. It's a very hard choice between the heart and the brain when damage such as what you have shown occurs. I don't know what the answer is, except maybe fencing to avoid the dilemma....Maryl

I lost all the flowers from one entire daylily bed and have used little bags of hair in old pantyhose ever since. They are tied around the gardens on stakes, shrubs, tucked into trellis areas, etc. This year I missed the tall red daylilies at the back edge of the yard, and knew it as soon as I saw the heads gone from one bunch.

Sorry to hear about the deer. I was devistated a couple years ago when they ate mine to the ground. The best thing I have found is Deer Scram.... it costs a bit but is well worth the price.

Disclaimer: I'm not promoting the product just letting you know what worked for me. I have no ties to the company.

I had to add the disclaimer cause it drives me nuts seeing adds for ppl promoting their own products.

Although I don't have Janice Brown myself, I have seen pictures and she is a beauty for sure. Sorry you lost your only bloom and have to wait until next year.

I don't have a deer problem, but can sympathize since I'd be mad as h if that happened to me.

Janice Brown rebloomed! A summer of record breaking heat, not much water, only her first year in the garden with only one small fan and she managed to rebloom for me...she is tough! She is not the prettiest looking Daylily but she makes me happy.

She has tried really hard, hasn't she? Such pretty colors. This was the 1st year for Janice Brown to bloom for me too, but mine didn't rebloom

That is great that you have a rebloom even if the flower isn't perfect.

All I gotta say is "Take that you mean old deer!!" lol!! Looks beautiful!! Judy

I remember that deer story! So glad it rebloomed for you :)

So nice that she rebloomed for you! The rebloom does not look as gorgeous as the poor remaining petals from the original flower, but that's ok. I'm sure once she is settled in, she'll be gorgeous for you again.

Thank you all for celebrating with me. I'm kind of a newbie at this but am sure learning a lot lurking on this forum. The Tulsa Area Daylily Society is having a sale on Saturday and my non-gardener husband is worried...he has every right to be! Ann

Ann: Good for you that you got to see the bloom. Go have fun at the TADS. Just take enough money that you actually want to spend. Those club sales are addictive too. ;-).
