That dreaded 4-letter 'S' word. Environment Canada has been kind enough to issue us with a winter storm watch/warning with somewhere in the vicinity of 10-15 cm of ... okay, I'll say it ... SNOW. Tomorrow morning may look a whole lot different than today.

((sigh))

Oddly we have not yet had a killing frost, only a few light ones. I dug my glads yesterday, figured I shouldn't wait any longer. I also cut back the peony foliage which was still green - usually it colours up nicely in the fall but not this year.

I really got hooked on fresh herbs this summer - I was growing gallon size pots of them to sell and, of course, had to trim them from time to time. The trimmings found their way into my kitchen quite often and so now I'm missing them (the frozen stuff just isn't the same). I moved a big pot of flat leaf parsley to a really protected spot to see if I can get that to last a little longer. And I repotted the oregano (my fave) and brought it into the house. While I was at it, I seeded some savory and basil in more pots.

It's cold out there today, 5C, the sun can't quite make it thru the cloud cover and enough breeze to call it a wind chill. I want to stay outside but (sniff) there's nothing left to do at the moment and it's too cold to just putter. So I finished off my time outside with some photos of what's still looking good today...

If it does snow, I sure hope it melts just as quick and I'd love to get a few more weeks of nice-ish weather. Winter in October just plain old sucks.

Great photos! We had our killing frost on the morning of the 10 th ... and it's been pretty darn cool since! It was a very good growing season, though as always I'm not looking forward to winter!

What beautiful flowers. Good grief that's a lot of snow to deal with so early. I saw two or three flakes yesterday and that was just about enuff for me. Good luck. I hope it doesn't come.

Here it's all over
Yesterday the Edmonton airport reported minus 10 C....at the house here it was minus 6 C
But today it was minus 10 C.
Monday thanksgiving we're going to have a break of plus 15 C high.

I've been thinking about you Westerners and the dreaded "S" word! We've got the same weather system going through here but it's all rain, thank goodness. We've had a couple of frosty mornings but nothing really bad so far. As usual i haven't gotten much done outside, but as soon as it dries up after this drenching, i'll have to get out and rake leaves and pull some weeds and cut a few things back.

((sigh)) yeah, it's snowing. A lot. Wouldn't you know it, Environment Canada got this one right, LOL. Hopefully it all melts.

I spent the day doing Christmas crafts - for some reason I'm really in the mood.

You're not alone Pudge. We've had s*#* twice but luckily it only stuck to the mountains.
We've had lots of fall frosts this year with our first real killing frosts around Sept 22, I think...three consecutive nights of -7C, yuck! Hubby and I went out in the dark and picked my green tomatoes...he held the flash light while I picked, lol! Luckily I had picked the last of the string beans a few days before.
Along with the late spring frosts, we've had a rather short growing season, but the fall colors have been the best I've seen in a few years :)

It finally came to my yard last night! The windshields of the vehicles were white and the deck is still white. The internet said that it went to -3C in the Brandon area but usually we are about 1 or 2 degrees warmer since we are a bit higher than the Brandon airport where they record the temps...so probably it went to -2 here.

We just got the edge of the storm that went thru Saskatchewan last weekend but only got about 1 cm of rain...no snow.

The low temps last night means that finally the cannas will have had frost! Now I can put them away in my 'pit'. Normally we have a killing frost about the 2nd or 3rd week of September. Wow...to not have frost until Oct 14!!! It was quite often down to 1 or 2C for the lows but not below 0C. I had a daylily, Siloam Ribbon Candy that held its flower for about 5 or 6 days 3/4 open. I would think it should be mush this morning.

All the veggies in the garden are pulled out except for about a 2' row of carrots and about 10' of beets. I do need to plant the garlic sometime this week.. once my DH tells me where he would like it to go...since the veg garden is his to plan.

I am still planting out new-to-me perennials I purchased this year. They are all in pots with well established root systems already. I have made 4 new flowerbeds this fall and mulched immediately with the flax shives (no weeding next year!!!) I have about 200 perennials left to get in yet but with the weather forecast there seems to be lots of time left yet. We are supppose to get temps up into the teens today and again all thru next weekend. The bed I am working on now is about 35' x 25' with walking paths in it.
