I had the same situation with some of my broccoflower plants. Nice foliage and no fruit. Strange...the rest of my stuff did great.

Maybe ask on the Veg. Gardening Forum. Someone there might know. It's probably because of a lack of something, but i have no idea what!

Have you had success in the past with brussels sprouts? I was under the impression that they were a very long season vegetable and not something we northerns would be able to grow. But if the farmers market has them... who knows, maybe they are growing a shorter season variety.

I was just reading on the veg forum of other people having no sprouts too. Sounds like they just did not have long enough to grow. This link might be useful... thanks to Jim from veg. forum for it.

BTW if anyone northern has any positive experience growing these things, I would be interested to hear it.

We've grown them almost every year, and they usually do fine. They never get very big, but big enough to eat. At some point during the summer, i always pinch out the top growth so that they put more energy into developing the sprouts, and i usually pick them at Thanksgiving (ours). I think they'd grow larger if we had a longer season, so maybe we should try starting them way earlier - i don't know, but i might experiment with that some day.

Did you cut the tops off when the sprouts began to form? Too rich of soil can also cause sprouts not to form. Also plant them where none of the cabbage family has grown before. Some years they don't do as well as others also. Last year we had huge ones and this year they were small. They are a cool weather crop so I figure the unnaturally extra warm summer had something to do with smaller sprouts. Up here we call it a cauliflower year when it does extra well, or a broccoli year and so forth. The Northern climate is unpredictable. That's the fun of gardening in the North. We work twice as hard and never know what will happen. Extra big turnips this year and radishes never grew anything but leaves.
