Example here in our zone near Chicago in a attached garage
they will perish and with the winter of last season some larger ones did just that.

Smaller ones in attic where temps seemingly are warmer
for winter storage in past have survived.

My fig trees are never exposed to temps below the frezing mark although just above..They go through a nice dormant stage...

But the small cuttings that have rooted this summer and the tiny trees in 4 inch pots I have received from e-bay concern me..I was wondering if anyone else lets those continue to grow all winter while the older mature trees are left to sleep?

Is it a must for even the smaller trees, rooted cuttings since the spring to go dormant for rest?

Small tree's or rooted cuttings in 4 " pots will dry-out quick.Even the small tree's can handle low temps, even below freezing to about 25* to let it go dorment for a few weeks than bring them back in a warm area with light and you will have a head start.
I have small 4" litle tree's in the ground and they came back and growing good.
What figtree's do you have sofar?I can get you some tree's just for shipping.

last winter mine was just about maybe 5 inches and it survived for several months in a small iced cappuchino cup:-) , and it's still growing
