Lilies

Oh, oh, oh, got my Valley K Lily Catalogue in the mail today, anyone else get theirs? After spending some time in Pudge's bubble I think I might have to order more lily bulbs!

For sure I want Dot.com and maybe some more Orientals.

Heck if the weather stays like this all winter, I'm going change my zone to a zone 6! (hee, hee, hee, this is great!)

I don't think Marcia's lily is Tropical Dream either. I have that one and it's more orangy than pink, and the petals are more elongated.

Here's a pic of mine. It's a bit shadowy, but I do remember that it doesn't have any pink in it.

    And the search goes on.....

Marcia, I think you should name yours 'Tropical Dream of Cancun' as it seems to fit the lily ;)

I was just looking through last year's Lily Nook catalogue, and my 'Tropical Dream' looks more like 'Gardenia'. I got the bulb from them, and maybe it was mislabelled. Or maybe because it is partially shaded for some of the day, the colours are different. Oh well, if mine gets to the size of Marcia's patch of lilies, I'll be tickled pink! :0)

It doesn't matter where we purchase our lilies...or other plants for that matter.....they can still be mis-labled. Unless you buy while in bloom, you really can't be 100% sure what you will get.

NS not sure what you did with your sick lily....but there is a lily virus...can't remember the name......that may be what the problem is/was. I have only seen it once in one bulb.....what I found out about it was to destroy the plant (do not compost)so it doesn't spread. I removed the bulb and even dug out and replaced the soil where it was planted...just to be on the safe side. I have since planted other lilies there without a problem.

Laurie...'Tropical Dream' is now on my list of must haves. LOL!

Marcia...I think you should replace your clump immediately in spring......and SEND that clump to me...hee hee. I don't have a big clump, yet.

Wow I hope it's not a lily virus! It was only the first couple of blooms that were funny, and I chalked it up to a cold wet spring. But in fact I had two Corridas next to each other, and last spring the other one rotted inside the crown and turned black and died. I posted about it last spring and didn't get a definitive diagnosis. I might have accidentally thrown foreign objects at it that got stuck and caused the rot. If that doesn't sound too crazy. Anyway the rest of the season that one was fine so I'm optimistic. Plus it has lots of babies coming in to replace the lost one :-)

I did get a virused peony once, but I cleaned up all the dead leaves and burned them, and in the following years the plant gradually recovered and it's fine now.

I just was thinking about the order I placed with Halifax Seed and suddenly thought about Red Lily Beetle. Because, so far, this is not a problem in Alberta, I would really be upset if my lilies from Nova Scotia showed up hosting this voracious pest.

Does anyone have this pest? What should I look for proactively to make sure that my bulbs don't have the eggs? If they arrive with something visible, I would simply package them up and send them back. But, if the eggs aren't visible, should they be soaked in bleach solution? Would this do any harm to the bulb or good in getting rid of the eggs?

I don't mean to sound panicky. It's more that I want to make myself aware of this potential problem and Save Alberta's Lilies.

Shauna, I don't know for sure but I think commercial growers have to maintain a certain standard of pest control. If they ship the same product to the States with a phytosanitary certificate, I don't see why they would have a different grade of lily for Alberta. That said, it's a scary thought... When or if lily beetles and Japanese beetles make it here I don't know what I'll do.

Most mail order companies will send bulbs....here's what The Lily Nook says about Lily Beetles.

Lily Beetle - Long prevalent in Europe, the lily beetle (Lilioceris lilii) has been reported in eastern North America. The larvae and adult beetles feed on the leaves of lilies. The larva is a yellow grub with a dark head, covering itself in dark, slimy excrement. The adult is up to 8 millimetres (0.25 inch) long and bright scarlet with black legs and antennae. Both life stages have voracious appetites and soon devour entire plants. The eggs are laid on the underside of the foliage. The following controls are effective: Spray plants with contact and systemic insecticides; both are effective. Drench soil with a soil insecticide to kill the mature larvae that live just under the soil surface in winter. Also, avoid transporting infested soil to other sites. Catch adult beetles between the fingers and smash them. The lily beetle has only appeared in a few places on this continent, and with care, it should be possible to prevent any lasting infestation.

Here's what Valley K has on this subject.

Also, I've e-mailed Halifax Seeds and await their response. Gil, funny you should mention Japanese beetles because, again, it is something found in Nova Scotia. It was also concerning me.

I must add, though, I'm not trying to stir up the pot with major concerns. More just trying to make sure that something so unwanted is not brought here and trying to become more informed.

From Veseys I just ordered three each of

    Centerfold
    Monte Negro

I didnt think that the Asiatics were supposed to be fragrant but the catalogues claim that Lanidini and Monte Negro are fragrant. I will have to see how fragrant they are when the time comes.

Did you qualify for the free bag of lilies, or free shipping, Sierra? When I put in my order (on line) I noticed that when I got to a certain amount it automatically entered a free bag (8) of lilies. A few more dollars got me 3 free Stella daylilies. But then when I put in the code for the free shipping, the free plants disappeared. I called Vesey's and asked and you can get either the free plants or the free shipping but not both,(so I took the free plants and paid the shipping, LOL).

    last modified: 11 years ago

Ohhhh I didn't know about the free plants! Just the free shipping with $50 or more order.....and uhhhhh I passed that with flying colors! :O

Can someone tell me where I'm going to plant all these???

Hey Marcia....Just wait a couple of years...then we can trade some....I have to wait and see how things fair this year after the great move to the new beds in the front last summer. I remembered that you are interested in the yellows too. They were divided last year...

Must be nice to have all that room. LOL.....all I have left are the strips of grass/weeds between the beds.

Ohhhh and only a couple more weeks till Costco has $3 off per bag.....wonder what they will bring in this year. :O

    Hey Everyone!

I just placed my first Lily order. 12 Landini lilies for $44.95 at Vesseys. And I qualified for a free "Improved Asiatic Lilies Mixed". ^_^

    last modified: 11 years ago

Wow stephanite, that is sure a lot of one kind of lily. I ordered two and plan to plant them with 3 white..'Centerfold'. Your clump will look beautiful! I hope you post pics when they all bloom.

Hey Sierra! Basically what happened was I was price comparing and Vesssey's put theirs on 40% off, so I figured "what the heck!" I'll probably only keep half of them and put the other half in my mom's garden. I was going to get her some anyway so it all works out! ^_^

As for the mixed bag, is it like a lottery, where you don't know what you are going to get until it blooms? Just wondering because I was going to group some colours together but if those are random, I'll just have to stick them somewhere and have fun with it!

    last modified: 11 years ago

That's what the mix is, Stephanie, a surprise.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Yup that is why I buy the mixes sometimes..for the surprise of it. After they are in your garden for a year or two though......you can then sort them by color and move each color into its own clump.

It drives me batty not knowing what their names are :P But then I am kinda nuts that way. I lost the name of one of my daylilies years ago, and sometimes I just can't even look at it.

But yeah, a mix is a great way to get things you might not have bought otherwise, and end up loving. For those who are not anal. LOL.

Ok I now have to ask if any one is growning L. speciosa rubrum or alba in our cold zones. Costco has them in bags 5 of each kind for a total of 10 bulbs for $11.89. When I looked at the lilynook they are $7.00 each.....hmmmmmm but will they grow here?

Has anyone recieved their lily orders from Veseys yet? I haven't.

I got mine last week, Sierra. From the time I got my shipping notice the order took about 10 days to get here. Most of the bulbs are great - big and healthy, but I'm a little disappointed in the Tango Collection (2 each of 5 varieties). I ordered 2 packs (one for a neighbor) and the bulbs were all kinda small and not the greatest shape. I planted them last weekend straight into the garden, so time will tell.

Got my Veseys order too last week. I know what you mean Pudge, I got a couple colours out of the Tango collection and they were small too. Glad I ordered Dot.com from ValleyK, they were huge!

I got my lilies a couple weeks ago from Veseys. In one bag I recieved a rotten lily. In another bag, I was short one and in another I recieved very small bulbs. I emailed them and let them know of my complaints and said that I expected a bulb to replace the missing one and a bulb to replace the rotten one. I belive it was Cappacino that were the small ones. I'll let you know if they do something about these as well. I also received some bulbs from Lily Nook and Botanus which were much better quality.
I am also looking for some names of your favorite later blooming lilies. I ordered 2 different kinds from Lily Nook - Shirley and Uncle Albert.

I like the coloring on Uncle Albert. One of my boys received it from the Lily Nook when they were in the Jr. Gardener program here in Brandon. Of course, it is now in my flowerbed and but eventually I may have to give him a bulb or two (whenever he gets his own house and wants to landscape the yard).

Even though I wasn't completely happy with the lily bulbs that I recieved from Veseys 2 weeks ago, I must say that I am comletely overly happy with their service. They sent me out 6 new bulbs to replace the 2 that I had expected them to replace. And to top that all of they sent me 2 new bigger Cappuccino bulbs. These are at least twice the size of the first ones that I had gotten.
    I'm doing the happy dance.

I was mistakenly sent another Botanus order last week, I couldnt figure out why I had another huge box when I went to pick up the mail when I just finished planting my order. Here I was sent (Judith in Ontario order), it was indeed a nice order with lots of plants that I didnt have. But being the honest person I am. LOL, I phoned Botanus and told them the mistake and sent it back to them that very day. Today, I received a Thank You gift of 15 Fantasia Mix lilies from them; I was so surprised and pleased of course that they would do this! Another check mark for customer service!

Happy dance here too Shelley ;)

I received my Veseys order this morning. I have to say there were a couple problems.....The Nepal lily bag was empty except for shavings......The 2 honeybee lilies were rotten and stinky...eeeeewwwww, the starburst and cappuccino lilies were really tiny......I just emailed them and am waiting for a response.

Ya Sharon, I agree....I just got the fall bulb catalog from them yesterday too.......but instead I went to the botanus website and checked out their bulbs....of course the new isn't up there yet.....but I think if I order, I will probably order from botanus.

I was so looking forward to the Nepal lily....and to find the bag empty was such a BIG disappointment. I still haven't heard back from them....I think I might call them.

I just heard back from Veseys, They cannot replace the rotten or empty bag or tiny lilies that they sent...as they have sold out for this season. So I get a credit for 3 of the 4 that I complained about.

What she didn't mention is the two 'starburst lilies that were also very tiny. I have emailed her back about that......not sure if she has included them in the credit or not....will have to figure it out.

Oh Well I guess I got a start for on my seed order next winter.

That sucks Sierra!! I guess you were the bottom of the list. What do they think, hmmm we are getting low on Nepal lilies - let's just send an empty bag. They won't notice.

I was sure happy with my Lily Nook order - they're almost all up already. Look great so far. Some of the bulbs were the size of apples!

Sierra, I'm sorry to hear that they are giving you a credit. Hopefully they get back quickly to you about the 'Starburst' lilies.

Just to let you know that I had no problems with Botanus. I was given a Heuchera hybrid 'Beauty Colour' instead of Hosta 'Gold Standard' that I ordered. I phoned them and they immediately sent up a hosta, another free lily and I got to keep the Heuchera. Good deal in my mind, I'll order from them again.

Ya its nice being on the bottom of their list. I ordered there just because I wanted the nepal lily. On the order form they had that the martagon was back ordered, but then instead they held my order and sent it out late.(almost 3 weeks after you guys got yours) The back order part on the packing slip was scratched out and the bulb was in my order.....Oh well.......I'll order from Botanus or the lily nook in the fall or next spring.
