Impressive foliage but what is it??

I've been growing this perennial for five years. I got the seeds in South Carolina from a public garden where it blooms in the long summer. Leaves are peculiar for the way they have "fins" running down the trunk. Grows to 10 feet tall. Anyone know what this is?

You might look into the genus Vernonia, also called Wingstem. If its not that, you might find reference to a look alike. I have a type that looks similar but doesn't have lobed leaves. Its recently started blooming and has yellow, daisy like flowers in large clusters. Does yours?

Your lead gave me the final laugh. I've finally found the name of this plant and posted the photo to the Hortiplex. It's Verbesina microptera - Mexican / Texas crownbeard.

Of course, Verbesina... Not sure how Vernonia came out. Its wingstem- Verbesina alternifolia- that I have. Glad you figured it out.
