Suckers

I was given a fig plant last fall. I was told it was 2 yrs old. This was the first year in the ground. The branches are in my opinion king of lame looking. There are figs growing that will not mature before winter. I am on Long Island in NY.

Some really stout suckers have come up. Can I trim the sparse branches down and leave the suckers? I think they may be my future stout tree.

What should I do to this plant before I wrap it for the winter?
