Winter Storage

I decided to try and store my one potted fig tree this way this year because I don't have a garage or anywhere to store it. I have it in a big hole and I put plastic cardboard to protect it from the wind, now I will put some tar paper on the inside of the plastic cardboard and I have some white stiff Styrofoam that I will put around the top part and cover it up with plastic after that so it doesn't get wet. What do you think guys?

ryecooder I don't quite know what you mean but I see by your photos that the tree is not dormant yet. You most likely know that already. Just make sure you have some ventilation to prevent moisture build up especially where the plastic is concerned. Beware of rodent damage possible also.

I just tied and covered all my trees today and shoved and I mean shoved them into my garage for the winter. It's the only part I don't like that much when it comes to growing fig trees in the colder climate areas.

I am going to wait till the leaves fall off before I rap it

Ryecooder you probably know this already but i say it anyhow, watch the night temps and if you get a few nights around 25 to 28 for a low store it. Sometimes the leaves may not readily just fall off but turn colors and stay on and if you wait for all to fall it might cause freeze burn to a lot of the upper branches that wont show till its uncovered in spring, sometimes what i do when the turn is just tap the stems and they fall right off, but watching the temperature at night is most important than waiting for leaves to fall off first, you probably know this but maybe it helps some others reading the post. Best luck to you.

Pezzuti9, i can understand what you do for storeing i also do similar , this year i made some room on other side of garage where my wife does not park car so i have some more room but then when my little figs grow up and put in bigger pots well its back to her side again and her having to walk around them and getting hit with them a little oh well she understands but after complaining for a few weeks she stops. Neighbors must think i'm nuts when they see these big sheets covering them.

    Hi Martin,
I only have a one car garage but it's a little deeper than most. When I had the home built there was to be a porch behind the garage with an access door to the porch. I had them omit the porch and make the garage longer (deeper). Even with that I have to pull a Houdini act to get enough room to get snow blower, the figs in as well as the SUV we have. The more years we live in this house the more junk gets collected. After I get done covering them they remenind me of sailboats with their sails tied up. I was lucky in one respect I had a few that are only in 5 gallon buckets. I placed those on top of the 20-gallon buckets containg the larger trees.
What will I do when I place those in the 20-gallon tubs as well??

    Regards to all
