Smith fig flavor/hardiness question

I have read of the outstanding flavor of the Smith fig, but I'm wondering in which category of flavor it would fit: 1.honey 2. berry jam or 3. caramel/vanilla? Also, if initially covered for several years to increase trunk diameter, and planted next to the house, could it keep from dying back to the ground in zone 7b/8a and produce fruit?

where in Texas do you live, i live close to abilene and curious maybe we can trade fig cuttings.

I live in Alpine Texas. I've been trying pomegranates over the last several years, and just got into figs. All I have is a Ronde De Bordeaux and am getting an Excel next week. They have just been rooted but when they are ready I would be more than happy to trade cuttings. I am looking for a Verte, Maltese Falcon, Smith, and Latarolla.
