my stop gap fig protection method

Well I decided it was time to use a stop gap measure in an effort to save some figs for myself. Not that I donÂt want to share with the birds but they have been eating 8 out of 10 ripe figs and they have not been doing any of the work.

This is an as yet unidentified dark fig. I got it from the bed of our gardeners truck. I actually rooted a bunch of them hoping to sell some on eBay but then tossed all the others out because I thought no one would want to buy an unknown fig. itÂs a small tree so far but it produces large dark purple/black figs that are red-ish/pink on the inside and very sweet and tasty. I also kept a green fig from those cuttings that is really good too.

This is a light weight shade cloth I purchased a long long time ago and a small flat cinch stapler and the scissors I used to cut the shade cloth with.

I wrapped the tree stapling it at the center and then stapled the bottom side and made a flap for the top so I can reach in an check on the fruit.

If I ever get around to putting the trees in the ground I intend to plant them in a raised bed with a 2"X2" frame covered in bird netting that does not touch the trees.
