Hydrangea 'variegata' in zone 5

I just got back from the 450 mile yardsale through the south (KY, TN, GA, AL for those who haven't heard of it) and picked up a great deal on a HUGE hydrangea 'variegata' for $12 bucks. I had to have it, but now am wondering if it will live out the winter. Has anyone in zone 5 or colder had any luck with this shrub? What steps do I need to take to try to keep it alive? Right now it's not planted, still looking at it at different angles...oh so pretty!!
