Hello Boydanny! there are a few ways of doing it... I like to put moist Sphagnum moss (which I buy cheap at Home Dpt) and then I put it in a ziplock bag for... about 4-6 weeks. That usually works great, other people like to wrap the cutting in moist newspaper... either way has work for me.

It will help to dip the half of the branch in rooting hormone. Some people suggest that after you notice rooting growth is to plant the rooted branch into a cup full with perlite and cover it with bigger cup to have the green house effect. I don't root cuttings that way I air-layer branches from my trees and I achieved about 50% success.

My favorite way to propigate a fig is:

1) Cut a hole in the bottom of a pot and elevate the pot off the ground using cinder blocks.

2) Take a lower branch and pull it through the hole in the bottom of the pot. Remove any leaves below the lip of the pot.

3) Fill pot with dirt.

4) Wait a week and partially sever branch from tree just below the pot.

5) Wait a few weeks (or months if you want a bigger tree) and fully sever the branch. You now have a healthy potted, fully rooted tree.

I would only bother with cuttings if you need to send it through the mail or take a cutting without permission.

I wrap my cuttings in lightly dampened newspaper and place them in a zip lock bag. I kept mine on the fireplace mantle, exposed to natural light and they rooted just fine. After a week, I noticed roots beginning to emerge. I then placed each one in a clear plastic cup mixed with 1 part perlite, 1 part potting soil. After a couple more weeks, I have visible roots throughout the cup. Your temp/humidity play a role in how quickly the cutting will root. I did mine on 9/9 and I now have leaves sprouting.
