Dark evergreen shrubs- Hedera colchica good?

I'm trying to plan a bed that will have redtwig and yellowtwig dogwood in the foreground, and I need something dark and evergreen behind them. This is a full sun site. I see in a catalog that a nice picture of Hedera colchica 'Green Spice" (Hardy Bush Persion Ivy) (adult ivy) and it appears to have a very dark foliage. Does anyone have experience with this cultivar? Are there better mid-sized dark green shrubs? (this is supposed to be 48" tall)

When I find a shrub I like, I intend to to buy just one plant and make cuttings. So, ease of propagation is a consideration also.

Thanks!
