Gorgi, Buckets would probably be a good idea if i were using landscaping cloth but i'm using Tyvec house wrap that doesn't allow nearly as much air flow. Constant moisture could lead to fungus and fig rot.

I fully understand that condensed moisture problem.
That is why I mentioned a 'loose' hat.
Think of it as an umbrella, stopping both cold and rain
water going inside; but loose enough to allow your
contraption to 'breath' some air for any condensed
moisture to evaporate...

Not sure what the actual diameter of your wrapping
is. If a bucket does not fit, use something similar,
but make sure that there is a small air gap.

Some people also put some tiny hole(s) at the bottom
for a better ventilation.

This is my 3rd winter using this method. They have good drainage so i want them to get rained & snowed on. Each new fig gets only one winters protection. The second winter they get no protection. So far the outcome has been very good. I don't want figs that i have to protect every winter.

So you are basicly protecting figs only from dry cold winds.

Yes, those winds do kill figs by desiccation (dry),
b/c the plumbing system is frozen (clogged up).

It is my understanding that pure extreme cold
(temperature alone), kills figs by damaging their
living cells.

Also, winter-protected figs with constant condensing water
tend to rot, specially the more younger wood.

BTW,
I have been in Baltimore MD (Greek Town -
next to Johns Hopkins hospital) and I have seen
many huge unprotected fig trees there. Maybe it has
something to do them being very close to the
heat buffer effect from the nearby waters...

Your right about the heat effect of nearby waters. I've found many huge fig trees near the coast, some at beach houses. Thats where i've been getting cuttings from the last couple years. I found a green fig in Ocean City that is even sweeter than my Violette du Bordeaux.
