What does that mean though...is it no longer good to eat? or is it just part of the growing process?

Just part of the growing process. Pineapples have flowers like other bromeliads. The result of those flowers are the seeds inside. I think they're kind of pretty too :-)

TG, as the pineapple gets larger, the blooms will disappear. Not to worry. Just make sure you put a few granules of fertilizer down the middle of the plants every couple months. Do not over water. I give mine very little water, feed often and get very large fruit.

Buuut... regular watering and feeding will give you Huge pineapples like these :)

And, after the fruit is mature, you can pry out the eyes where those blossoms were and plant them. They contain the pineapples' seed. Takes a long time to grow them from seed but it can be done.

Sumala, nice pineapples! You are making me hungry (and thirsty). The ones that I regularly water get to that size. I have found that the ones I water less gets even larger than those.

Wow...thanks everyone...I was afraid that somehow my pineapples mutated into an ornamental variety :-)The blooms are pretty I was just mad at the because I thought my pineapple would no longer be edible....Now I can just enjoy the blooms and the fruit. Trini1 I had forgotten all about your fertilizer packs until you mentioned it. Thanks for reminding me. Any particular fertilizer I should use?

I've used Dynamite and many others. I think as long as it is fed, it is happy.

Mine just started to bloom purple flowers too. I did not know about this either. I am so glad I saw this posting.

How long does it take for them to grow from the tops?

watermelon---The tops root easily. Usually it takes 2 years to get fruit.

All mine are currently from tops all planted around the same time....I only had one fruit so far.

If I didn't hate taking the time to post pics so much you guys would be in a lot of trouble. I have a peach tree that I've been wanting to prune and have been too lazy to post the pics :-) If it helps though Mine looks just like ladybugs. :-)
