turmeric

Dear Herbal Buds,

I found some turmeric roots in the Asian grocery today and bought a dollars worth. About 8 finger sized roots.

I bought them to plant and see if I could grow them here. A local acupuncturist and herbalist said that they would grow here.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas? Sun? Shade? Damp? Dry? Etc.?

Also, I was wondering of they are eaten as they are or are they available for people in the know to make dyes or to dry and make the food powder from the roots.

FYI, There is strong evidence coming out that turmeric is a powerful anti-cancer herb.
