Four Season Vegetable Gardening

summer/fall overlaps!

It is hard here in USDA zone 8ish to start fall/winter veges, cause our summer veges last well into the fall! September and October actually being our warmest months!

I have some lettuce planted in the shade, but the tomatoes are just now starting to produce and I have a couple of months left!

I guess the only way to do winter stuff is to buy starts.

It's WAY too hot to start stuff in the GH!

Hi,
I know what you mean. I am in zone 8, in the southern Sierra Nevadas. The last couple weeks I have planted cool season crop seeds in 3" containers, and I take them outside in the shade in the mornings, then in the house by a glass door. This is my first overlap, so I guess I'll keep them in larger containers, until it cools down enough. I have pickling cucumber plants in the ground, on a drip system, witha couple inches of pine needles to keep them cooler. Its too hot for green beans to produce now, but they have been in the ground, and I hope to get beans this Fall.

On the other hand, you must have a nice, long season for growing the cool-weather stuff, on either side of the hot months.
