Hi, I´m from spain, but from a particulary cold site, where usual spanish fig varieties d´ont resist well...All people from my village says it´s imposible to grew well one here.

I would want to try with american hardy varieties like "hardy chicago" o "brown turkey", imposible to find here.

I could get some spanish varieties, like "napolitana negra" for trade.

How are the ones you are growing now? I would imagine you shouldn't have any trouble in spain, people here in America grow them in very cold climates but take the time and effort to overwinter them. You can wrap them up or bury them I would imagine. There are many threads here about overwintering fig trees. Like I said you have to take the time or else bring them in in the winter like I do with my Italian varieties, bye the way, Napolitana negra is an Italian variety of fig, not Spanish. As to american varieties, you can basically grow many different kinds. Hardy Chicago is a Sicilian variety originally and can withstand colder temperatures due to the fact the come from Mt. Etna in Sicilia. Other people say that they are not hardy. It all depends on the caring and maintenance you put into it. I have a Hardy Chicago I can send clippings next year to you. Hardy Chicago in Italy is sometimes referred to as Mongibello. Just grow your figs and take good care of them but I doubt it is impossible. Ciao, Maggie

    Thanks for your indications Maggie.
I explain you more of my situation... I usually live in the south of spain , but my origin, and where i have my own land in property is in the centre-north of spain, in a village at 3000 feets of altitude, with some winter nights with -15 Cº.
At the moment there is no one fig tree planted outside in all the village...

Ciao, I figured you probably lived up High. I live in an altitude of 2767 Ft Above sealevel. I keep all of my figs in a large pot then bring them indoors under large grow lights in the winter. Or you could bring them in and let them go dormant inside as well. I keep them outside of course in the spring and summer where we usually get 75-85 degree F weather. You shouldn't have any problems. Some people around including my Uncle keep theirs outside and bury their fig in the winter. You could probably go these routes, No? Ciao.

Hi vikkingo92, Did you see the article link posted by XON? I put the thread link below. It seems that your winter low of -15 C is similar to the grower in Sweden. That probably is about US zone 7 where many people grow in-ground figs successfully. I think as Maggie says you should be able to grow figs by providing some form of protection over the winter.
I'm in zone 6a which ranges from -20.56 C to -23.34C. In-ground trees can be protected here. And if the tree is winter protected you don't need to worry as much about hardiness. I've been looking for early ripening figs, figs with reliable breva crops, and figs that ripen during cool weather. Though a fig that would be hardy here is a dream of mine.

Here is a link that might be useful: Interesting experiment in cold climates

    Hi italiangirl adn fignut

:), Putting figs to grow under artificial light, that´s unbeliable here in spain, never eared that. :).

So I supose there is not a fig varietie thats resists these temperatures by itself.
I will cover them in the winter with a plastic or something for sure.

    Thanks you.

    Hi Maggie,

I was interested in your comment that Hardy Chicago is also sometimes known as Mongibello in Italy. That's the first time I've heard that. Isn't Mongibello another name for Mt. Etna?

Hardy Chicago was traced by the Bellclare Nursery to have originated from Mt. Etna.
