Hi JD,
From your description it sounds as if it is one of the triphylla type fuchsias maybe Thalia?
These can take more heat than the ordinary cultivars but to help to stop it wilting, place it in a postion where it does not get full pm sun on it, in a place with good air flow/ventilation. Water in the mornings, keep it moist but not soaking wet - Kath:)

This problem, of getting the plant home, it wilts, flowers drop, it dies, seems to be very common on your side of the world. When ever I buy a Fuchsia, I try to replicate the conditions it was in for a few days, to see how it gets on.
I look for a light but shaded spot, out of draughts or drying wind. Make sure the medium is moist but not over watered, and then keep an eye on it to see how it behaves. After a few day, move it to where you would like it or repot it with other plants, and again, keep an eye on it. It will soon let you know if it is not a happy bunny!
It's trial and error to find the best spot. Often what's best for us is not best for the plant and you may have to move it several times.

Thanks. I think your info and advice sounds dead on. Unfortunatly I didn't get you advice soon enough. I violated just about all of the tips that you offered. I assumed that the wilt was because it got too dry. I replanted it, drenched it, and put it in the most sheltered spot I could find. I obviously exposed it to too much sun (1/2 day of direct AM sun) and allowed it to get too dry. I hope it pulls through because it looks so nice where it is. Its beside my deck in a stand above a bed of hosta and lilly turf. Its also directly below a humming bird feeder hanging from a Japanese red maple. I'll keep praying for it.
