I've never heard of anyone grafting Fuchsias, I guess it could be done, usually if you want different flowers in the same pot you just plant different varieties in the same pot.
Fuchsia do have a habit of sporting on occasion, when this happens you will find a branch with either different colored flowers or different colored leaves on your plant. These can be propagated and this is another way of getting a new variety.

Hi Tight.... that was an interesting piece on grafting, I had never heard of anyone doing this before. I think a lot of new Fuchsia growers are going to benefit from your beginners guide as well.
It's really nice to see some more Fuchsia growers, addict in my case, participating in this forum.
Do you have any hints on telling the difference between f. arborescens and f. paniculata besides the tube shape?

Hi In a word no... and I am an ex British Fuchsia Society Judge (now disabled with vision problems) who exhibited F. arborscens last year (2006) at the BFS Harrogate Autumn Show winning first (F. arborscens) and second (F. procumbens 'Wirral').

The difference in the tube I believe is so miniscule that only a botanist would be interested, I say grow them and enjoy them.

I find growing F. arborescens (or is it F. paniculata?) very easy here in the North of England and I can have a cutting up to a reasonable show standard plant in a couple of years.

Thanks Tight, the only reason I was interested in the difference is I was going to try a bit of hybridizing using arborescens/paniculata, don't know which one I have. I love the flowers on mine and thought it would be fun to see what I could come up with.
Another Fuchsia I have, Nettala, has sported, at least I thought it had, took cuttings, I have a picture of this one and the different shaped seed pod. The next year when these cuttings bloomed they were different again, but not the same as the original Nettala. I must say this is a very unstable variety. Nettala, I believe is a sport of Chang, my cuttings looked similar in shape, but not quite the same and the color was different from both Nettala and Chang.
I find Fuchsias fascinating. It's too bad they have dropped in popularity over here. My plants will never be show quality I'm afraid, I'm happy if they just look half decent, well maybe one or two might look showable in any given year. I recently gave up floriculture judging myself because of health issues. Time marches on.
