Cutting back fuscia

I started a hummingbird garden and planted a "hardy" fuscia which has been growing well. It is only three foot tall but has spread out well. Do I need to cut it back in the fall or not? It is planted with a six foot fence on its east side. Also - when would be the best time to take cuttings to root - should they be the new growth on the bush? Thanks for all your help.

Hi Kaysbelle,
No never cut them back in the autumn (fall), the old stems help to protect the crown of the fuchsia during the winter. Leave the old growth on until you see new growth coming out of the ground next late springtime. In zone 5 you will need to give it extra protection for the winter, cover the plant with at least 6 inches of mulch before the frosts come. I would take some cuttings now in case it doesn't survive. Yes you can take them now, tip cuttings are the best, try to find some on your plant that do not have flower buds in. Go to the FAQ 'How do I progate Fuchsias' for information - Kath:)
