1/3 of my pots were begged from Burger King (pickle buckets) and pool stores (cleaned well) for free. Ask nicely when they aren't busy.
the other 2/3's bought slowly over the years (KMart, HD, Lowes) and moved every time we did.
Am now sinking them in the ground after lining the hole with newspaper so the d*** nematodes can't sneak in.

If your interest is in 5 gallon buckets another good bet besides BK is your Grocery Store bakery. They get their cake icing in 2, 3.5, 4, and 5 gallon buckets and will usually give you what they have on hand since they just throw them out. You can also purchase buckets at Firehouse Subs and Duncan Donuts since they believe in recycling.

Any pool store that also does weekly service will have a surplus of large buckets, and will most likely give them to you free of charge. At the store I worked at they would throw them out because they couldn't give them all away.
