They need sun, sufficient water and if in containers, decent potting soil and periodic fertilization. In most cases, they will grow in spite of these requirements - extremely durable and robust plants - so I'm not sure what to tell you about yours.

How'd they do over the summer....hopefully, you haven't thrown them out for lack of flowering and are willing to give them a place of their own so they can come back next spring to show you what they can do.

I suspect they didn't please you because you watered them to much.
Like any other plant, too much water at their roots, they soon stop growing---if they don't die---the bottom leaves are the first to tell you---they drink what they can...and then, are forced to drink more and they resent it.

When you water, do so always to drainage....allow the water to sit in the saucer under it for no more than 10 minutes...then dispose of that. Let the plant dry down somewhat between waterings.

You may have not put anything between the soil and the drainage holes---thus the roots are sitting in wet soil all the time and they begin to rot.
Make sure always the plant drains well after a watering and never let it sit in the drainage water for long periods.

Fertilize as the plant requires it when it goes outside in the spring/summer.
