Trying to save my pelargonium

I spent the winter in AZ and bought a geranium for my deck. In March, it was glorious. It is now July and it looks like it's been through a war. I probably should have brought it inside before the heat, but did not. I am now back in a moderate climate, and my geranium is showing signs of life, although some of the branches look like they may have died. What is the best way to prune them to encourage new growth?

If its a zonal pelargonium, , just hack it as hard as you like, theyre tough as old boots!
The only thing they dont like is frost, and theyre not supposed to be that keen on water on the leaves but I'm not so sure!

I'm experimenting with one by constantly chopping it hard as soon as a shoot appears, should end up with a very compact pelargonium.

Thanks. It is a zonal, and I've hacked away! Looks pretty pathetic, but I will not give up on this beauty. You wouldn't believe how glorious it was when it was in full bloom...
