Scented Geranium Pruning Problem

Help. I pruned back a number of my scented geraniums a few weeks ago to help shape them. I noticed the stems where I pruned them are dying back, have truned light brown, and are contiuing to die back further towards the center of the plant. As the dye back progresses, the leaves are also dying off. What did I do wrong? What can I do to remedy this?
