I haven't lived in Washington DC for 21 years now. Are you talking about the conservatory that is on the Mall close to the Capitol building?

Hi Larry - yes, that's right. It went through renovations and reopened in Dec 2001. The garden next to it is still closed - I think it re-opens next year. The USBG also has other rooms (like succulents) but not much is happening this time of year.

I really enjoyed visiting the Conservatory when I lived around DC in the early eighties. Oh, by the way, I've lived on base in Fort Meade, Maryland. My ex-wife was in the army at the time. I commuted to work in Silver Spring, Maryland. Anyway, one of the neat things they had back then was volcanic rock on the ground. They then planted African violets in the small pockets in the rocks to simulate how violets grew in the wild. I always liked to visit the Conservatory about this time in the winter.
