I doubt something so newly planted will provide enough substance for division at this time, unless you bought very large plants to begin with. Generally, hardy perennials are not divided until after several seasons in the ground.

And I would be careful about over generalizing with the growing conditions requred by hardy geraniums. There are so many different species and hybrids and each has its own preferences. Speaking very broadly, most hardy geraniums will be happiest in sun to light shade and with moisture retentive but well draining soils. With very few exceptions, I'd not consider these plants to be especially drought tolerant.

Rather than pinching, most hardy geraniums will benefit from a close shearing after the initial bloom flush. They will rapidly produce new foliage and often a rebloom. This can be done immediately as they bloom, no need to wait for a season or two. But I would wait for a season or two before I elected to divide.

Agreed with the above except that waterings should be fairly sparse; my geraniums bloom best and develop when allowed to completely dry out. They do not like too much moisture for too long. They do prefer sun.

A nice friend gave me the geraniums from her garden.
They told me that they never did water them (it's possible that this year they needed to though)
They also said this one likes a lot of sun.

I did divide a couple of them.
I hope the ones I divided will make it.

Is it possible these are Biennials?
And if there was rooting hormone on these would that have helped with the dividing?

I just finished reading an article on perennial geraniums. It stated they are one of the plants you can use when you have to watch your water use. They come up every year, I have one that is evergeen, all year. I have been dividing mine, which are 5 years old now.
