The two gold fish plants I have are both trailing.....

hi randi, at first they ARE upright then with time they hang over the sides. it took me a while (and nearly died on me a few times!) til i found its perfect spot. mine's in a big pot on a stand (so it can trail over) in filtered sun most of the day and direct sun part of the day. it blooms nonstop june-sep at least. is yours inside or out?

My outdoors nematanthus don't trail that much. In the cooler temperatures outside here in N. California they tend to grow more shrubby, though they hang over and down the pot somewhat. Some are hanging down, but they don't get long. I once recovered a greenhouse grown nematanthus that hung straight down 3 feet. Without cutting it back I put it out in the bright shade, and the new growth was all upright and shrubby. I cut back the long branches and it stayed more ball shaped than cascading. So, greenhouse or indoor plants grown lushly in warm temperatures will grow fast and weak-stemmed, while outdoor plants in sub-tropical places like coastal California will grow harder and more shrubby.
