That's going to be next to impossible to name in its current state. The problem isn't just that it lacks flowers, its that it is so young and small. While a few things can be eliminated (most if not all Kaempferias for example).

Take good care of it and hopefully it will grow big enough next year for us to narrow it down some more. As you already seem to know, a 100% ID will require flowers, but a more mature plant may get us to genus.

I can't say I've ever seen a curcuma that looked like that even as young. (The hidden gingers.) Though still early my gut feeling is one of the hedychiums. (Butterfly ginger) 2nd is an alpina. And last guess is a very young costus. (Spiral ginger.)

It sure LOOKS like a baby Hedychium. If you got it inexpensively, with no fanfair, bets are that it's white butterfly, which has lovely white flowers and a wonderful fragrence.
And yes, I love my gingers for their foliage, as well as their blooms. Especially the Costus and Alpinas.
Careful, gingers can be addicting.

Hi, Thanks for your messages! I actually saved this plant from an abandoned business about 6 months ago so I know nothing about it (only found out it was ginger a few weeks ago!). It was nearly 3 feet tall but I cut it down due to damage. It LOVED being "young" again and before I knew it, it was as tall as before, it grows really fast! When it got too much sun a few weeks ago and dried on the tips, I cut it back again. Heck, I didn't know it flowered and I have a small deck. :( Soooo, if you folks are saying it's young because it is so small, well that would be my fault. Otherwise, when it's bigger it's leaves unroll into opposites, from sturdy stalks that lean a bit in an unusual way. The leaves are tender and light green with no shine or fuzz.

Well, I can't wait to tell you all what the flowers look like... next year?? Any more thoughts? Please keep them coming!

My guess is Hedychium garderianum 'Kahili'. For photo, see link posted below.

I am taking a wild shot at it because:
I live in So. Cal and I know what is commonly planted so if you got if from a commercial area and it was being trashed, it had to come from a commercial supplier. This is the most common commercial ginger, which I do spec. for commercial sites.
Even in youth your photo has a deep green slightly waxy lustre and apparent thickess in gauge of the leaflets common in H.garderianum 'Kahili'.

Though as all others have stated, it's impossible to confirm without flower blah, blah, blah...
