What critter did this?

My niece sent me the following pictures of her newly planted pepper plants. These are the before and after pics. What could have eaten this whole plant overnight? She was thinking maybe snails but I thought I'd ask some of the more experienced veggie growers on this forum for their opinions. TIA

    ouch

i have seen similar damage from big brown caterpillars (someone just recently posted a picture of one of them asking for ID ) These moths seem to operate overnight and eat a lot

On the other thread, the caterpillar was IDed as cutworm. This is the creature I suspect

That's a pretty big plant for a cutworm to eat - looks more like somebody chomped the top right off - deer? Rabbit? Goat?

I had rabbits eat the leaves off my small crotons just like that until I put fensing around them until they got bigger.

yes and no. I would not underestimate the suckers. I had 3 big pepper seedlings in a 15 gallon pot, and one had its leaves chewed off in the same manner. Found the chubby worm later ...they seem to hide out during the day.

The pepper plant does not seem too big for a worm :)

Looks like my bush beans and sunflowers after deer got to them. It all happened in one night. Gone. No bugs anywhere. At first I was mystified and then caught them in the act on the next crop. That's when the 4-foot fence went to a 12-foot fence. Also, rabbits chew the entire plant off, but of course they go for the smaller stuff.

Did I mention that it completely defoliated 2 peppers and her one and only brussel sprout plant. A lot of munching for a single caterpillar. She said that it has only affected the plants in this bed but not the others. She has seen some kind of insect that she says looks like a cross between a roly-poly and a millipede (lots of them)and was wondering if that could be the culprit.

well, hey, that is what ate one of my pepper seedling.
Good luck with finding your culprit, the voracious eater :)

    Chupacabra?

I suspect the rollypolly/millipede is benign. But I've had both caterpillars and snails do that kind of damage overnight, both out in the yard and in the pot ghetto. My yard is inner-city urban, so no deer here (though lots of chickens - welcome to Miami, we weren't shooting at you, we were shooting chickens.)
We had a really wet winter, so my snail population is completely out of control.
But... a pepper might come back if you keep watering it. they're often pretty hardy. Don't know about the brussel sprouts.
