I am no expert on ginger. That being said, I grew up in Phx AZ. You can grow any tropical plants in Phx as long as you water them (alot). Some partial shade is good too, or some people keep a shade canopy over plants. It gets absolutely scorching hot in the summer and pots dry out so quickly that I never bothered with them and put everything in the ground. The soil is really rocky and can use good compost and other organic material mixed in. It is also better to use a soaker hose on plants due to evaporation and sunburn if the water gets on the leaves. If you are busy you can put it on a timer as well. There are a few tropicals that like to be dry in AZ such as bougainvillea. I've even seen it planted on the highway/freeway dividers which are scorching in the summer and they bloom thier silly little heads off, lol. Good luck
