If you mean stem cuttings, no, Hedychiums must be propagated by division of the rhizomes. Stem cuttings won't root. If you have any Zingibers, however, or Costus, these can sometimes be grown from stem cuttings.

Costus are the easiest things to work with cutting wise, and a section of cutting will do. Hedychium will sprout by cutting, but they are the most difficult I'd say. To start, you aren't rooting a stem, you are trying to get an axillary bud to form a new plant which will eventually make roots. You need a stem that is fully matured (ie flowered), you have to cut the whole stem off and lay it flat covered with mulch and wait a long time. Its not an almost guarantee like costus, but it does work. Time and space consuming process. And given the rate at which most hedychium multiply not the most practical thing. costus and relatives, globba, zingiber, and hedychium work. I'd bet others would as well but i've never tried it. For those that bloom alpinia on a regular basis, you should try this then let me know :-)

I haven't ever tried to root a stem of any of the alpinias, but all of my A. purpuratas produce a ton of what I call "Plantlets" (its a waterlily term, I know, but I don't know the correct term for a ginger, maybe "bulblets"?) from the old flowers. These make roots, and I just pluck them off and plant them. My costus all do it too, I have gotten plantlets from Costus stenophyllus, Costus French Kiss, Costus barbatus, COstus Green Mountain, Costus longibracteatus, Costus varzareum (sp?), Costus laevis, and Costus amazonica variegata. The only ones I can think of that haven;t made these plantlets are Maroon and Emerald Chalice.
