I always think they look like little alien landing craft, but maybe that's just me! I've planted literally thousands of these things, and I always put the main part of the tuber about 1/2 to 1" under the soil surface, in a 5 or 6" pot, with the "arms" and their fleshy ball-like appendages pointing down. Seems to work fine. You can water them in, but don't keep them real wet until you start to see a shoot come up, which should be within the next month or so. Some of ours are just starting to pop now after being dormant all winter, so I've been frantically dividing and repotting these last few weeks.
