Are Cardamom rhizomes edible?

I bought a cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) plant this week from the Montreal Botanical Garden. It was huge and rootbound in its 2 gallon pot and was a total bargain at 12$!

Today I divided it and made 7 nice divisions in 6" to 8" pots with bits of rhizomes to spare. Having extra rhizomes on hand and knowing that this plant is a ginger, I was wondering if the rhizomes of E. cardamomum are edible. Does anyone know?
